🔧 Scope of Work
Bastion Group provided comprehensive structural engineering services for the transformation of the courtyard at the historic Ryder Hotel. The project included the design and integration of modern amenities into a constrained, operational hospitality environment.
Key elements included:
- Open-Air Bar Pavilion: A 30’x18′ covered structure with exposed wooden trusses and an extended 50′ parapet to screen rooftop MEP systems.
- Exterior Entry Canopy: Light-gauge steel canopy (20’x10′) secured via tiebacks to the existing structure, designed to complement the original hotel aesthetic.
- Structural Enhancements:
- New cast-in-place concrete stairs and planter retaining walls.
- ADA lift retrofit and slab extensions at the lobby and breakroom.
- Reinforced stairs at the hotel coffee shop.
- Additional Features:
- Coordination for a custom fireplace design.
- Integration of site features like tiki bars and decorative fountains, contributing to a vibrant guest experience.
🤝 Collaboration & Challenges
The project was delivered in active coordination with Choate Construction and hotel ownership to maintain ongoing operations during construction. The existing historic conditions posed several constraints, requiring strategic demolition reviews and on-site adjustments to fit evolving design intent and budget alignment.
