Morrison Yard – Bridge Access Stair

🏗️ Project Overview

Bastion Group is supporting the development of a two-story pedestrian stair tower providing access between the Morrison Yard development and adjacent bridge infrastructure in downtown Charleston. The project combines architectural visibility, seismic resilience, and complex permitting coordination with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT).

🛠️ Scope of Services

Bastion Group’s role includes:

  • Engineering collaboration on structural design of the reinforced concrete stair tower
  • Preparation of a formal basis of design aligned with both IBC 2018 and relevant AASHTO pedestrian bridge criteria
  • SCDOT-facing deliverables including:
    • Compliance letters
    • Permitting support
    • Coordination meetings to address agency concerns
  • Structural modeling and assessment of bridge-to-stair interaction during wind and seismic events

🧠 Engineering Strategy

The tower is designed as a double cantilevered structure with four reinforced concrete columns and steel handrails, supported on deep Fuller Pile foundations. The structure is carefully detailed to prevent conflict with the adjacent bridge—even under extreme deflection conditions caused by wind or seismic forces.

✅ Value Delivered

Bastion Group’s involvement ensures this highly visible piece of civic infrastructure is engineered to meet both aesthetic goals and strict safety standards—while successfully navigating a complex permitting environment.
